Mission Aviation Fellowship
Every three minutes a MAF aircraft takes off or lands, reaching isolated places where flying is not a luxury but a lifeline. MAF is a worldwide organisation whose vision is to physically and spiritually transform isolated people in Christ’s name and whose purpose is to share God’s love through aviation and technology. Jungles, mountains, swamps, conflict and poor or non-existent roads conspire to deny people physical and spiritual care and hope for the future. MAF’s fleet of more than 130 aircraft helps to overcome these barriers and deliver relief workers, doctors, pastors, school books, food, medicines - anything that can only be speedily and safely delivered by air - to people in need.
MAF started work in the UK and USA in 1945 and was shortly followed by MAF Australia. Jack Hemmings, one of the first MAF UK pilots was a resident of Harwell. Each group lost aircraft early on but lessons were quickly learned, and from its small and struggling beginnings MAF has grown into a highly developed, effective and unique organisation. Our churches support MAF through prayer and with a donation from the St Matthew’s World Mission fund, and MAF speakers occasionally preach at services.
